Ron Dearing UTC AR engagement event

Students from Ron Dearing UTC have been given a high-tech first glimpse of exactly how their state-of-the-art school will look once expansion work is complete.

The mixed and augmented reality (AR) tour of the former fire station used the latest holographic technology to bring the architect’s plans to life based on a 3D model of the site.

They used headsets, hollow lens equipment, tablets and mobile phones to visualise exactly how each area of the building will look, scanning QR codes to pinpoint various parts of the project.

Progress so far

Progress so far has been very controlled as the new scaffold has been designed to support the building to allow our demolition contractor to take internal walls and floors out.

We also had our first visit from Considerate Constructors, where we scored of 44 out of 45 - the highest ever for Sewell Construction!

Other recent activity has included;

• Full designed scaffold around the building
• Temporary steel supports in readiness to remove walls and floors
• Full internal strip out of the existing mechanical and electrical equipment
• Internal brick walls and stud walls removed on the ground and first floor fire station
• Broken out and formed new stairwell opening
• Removed all external windows
• Remove second floor concrete floor in the police station side in readiness to form new second floor class room
• Removed old fire station doors
• Formed opening for new reception entrance.
• New steel work and pad stones in place in readiness for the new 2nd floor classroom.

Over the next month

Over the next month we should have completed the demolition works, allowing the internals to start to take shape which will be very exciting to see.

We’ll be;

  • Stripping off the existing roof tiles
  • Felting and installing new roof tiles
  • Repairing existing tiled walls
  • Insulating the new roof internally
  • Starting to form new walls to the 1st and 2nd floor in the fire station side
  • Preparing for mechanical and electrical works to begin
  • Installing steel works to form new 2nd floor classroom in the police station side
  • Painting existing steel roof trusses
