About the project

This project consists of refurbishing several spaces within the Roger Stevens building at the University of Leeds. It’s split over two floors, with Level 5 becoming the Faculty of Biological Sciences (FBS) Bio-imaging and Flow Cytometry facility. The mezzanine floor will create Level 6, which provides a high quality seminar and meeting space.

These rooms were used as storage for the geography faculty, and have become outdated, with some rooms not being used to their full potential. Refurbishing these areas will provide new updated working spaces, and house state-of-the-art equipment to aid the university’s research and development teams, boosting the city’s reputation as a leader in medical tech.

By bringing together biological and clinical scientists with cutting-edge equipment, the lab will allow the development of targeted and effective therapies across all disease areas and improve patient outcomes.

Alongside the installation of new equipment, the works also consist of mechanical and electrical updates to upgrade and future-proof the university infrastructure, including creating a new plant room.

Progress so far

Over the last few weeks we have made good progress with the project.

The mass barrier ceiling has been installed and made way for partition walls. Drylining and partition work has been completed throughout Level 5 and Level 6, which has allowed us to get a first 'mist' coat throughout in readiness for the mechanical and electrical installation.

Builders' works have been formed to allow mechanical and electrical services which will provide the space with the necessary means to operate. Mechanical and electrical containment has started to be installed within the ceiling space.

In a few weeks the ceiling space should be ready for the ceiling grid installation, which will then make way for further mechanical and electrical installation. The main entrance curtain walling has been installed, along with glazing and flashings, which will be complete shortly ready for door automation and access control. We'll also be continuing with the mechanical and electrical installation, and installing ceilings. Additionally, we'll be preparing the flooring with self-level to give a smooth, clean finish ready for the installation of the carpet tiles and vinyl, preparing door openings ready for door installation early next month, and finishing off the curtain walling and main entrance.
