Ganton School SEND Classrooms

This project involves the installation of a new modular unit to provide additional SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) accommodation within the existing academy site. The proposed location, currently used as a minibus parking area, will be repurposed to support this enhanced provision.

Alex Young, Headteacher at Ganton School, says: “The development of two bespoke modular learning spaces will mean that Ganton School can offer 20 children in the area the opportunity to attend a specialist provision that will meet their needs, providing them with the chance to thrive both now and for years to come. The project is an excellent example of how good collaboration can result in real life outcomes for the most vulnerable children and young adults in our area.”

The scope of works includes the construction of a new modular building on a piled foundation system, complemented by a decked access area featuring both ramped and stepped access to ensure full accessibility. Landscaping works will also be undertaken to integrate the new facility seamlessly into the surrounding environment.

Progress so far

We are currently in week 5 of a 19-week programme, and progress on site so far has been really good.

Key activities completed to date include:

  • Establishing the full site setup
  • Removal of the existing carport canopy
  • Installation of the piling mat in preparation for the piling works
  • Installation of the attenuation tank and connection to the existing drainage system
  • Installation of 21 piles will be completed this week

We have also supported Nathan, a work experience student, who has spent the past two weeks working alongside our groundworks team to gain valuable hands-on experience in a live construction environment.

In addition, last week we welcomed six students and two teachers from Ganton School, the end users of the project, for a site visit. As part of the visit, we utilised augmented reality (AR) technology to give the students an immersive virtual tour of the new building. This allowed them to visualise the completed space and explore what their future classrooms will look like.

In the upcoming weeks

Over the next three to four weeks, we will commence the foundation works for the modular buildings. This phase will begin with the excavation around the installed piles to facilitate the placement of reinforcement, followed by the pouring of concrete foundations.

Once the foundations have cured, we will construct supporting pillars to receive and support the modular units upon delivery. In parallel, we will also be installing the drainage infrastructure and service ducting, ensuring all connections are in place ahead of the scheduled delivery of the modular buildings on 21st July.
