About the project

The Hull College Levelling Up Scheme consists of two projects on the city centre site.

We have a mezzanine extension in the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) workshop building to create a new learning space for painting and decorating (P&D) students, and we’re remodelling and refurbishing Corridor A within the building to add training bays and make it suitable for mechanical and electrical (M&E) learners.

It’s currently term time at the college, so we are working in a live environment meaning site logistics can be challenging, but due to our strong long-term partnership with the college, we’re able to solve any problems before they arise.

We’re also proud to announce that we had Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) assessors on site on Thursday 4 December and received 45/45 marks! We’re now just waiting to see if we’ve received any additional bonus points for best practices or innovations. Watch this space!

Progress so far

Progress so far for Corridor A

We’ve completed a full strip out back to a shell and introduced new training bays built in blockwork. We’ve also stripped back all M&E and are nearing the end of M&E first fix.

Steelwork has been introduced to support new steel stairs and handrails for the two second floors we’ve created. Timber lids have been applied to almost all of the new structures and dot and dab has started.

Progress so far for the CITB Workshop

We’ve completed all piling, working with the college to safely complete works alongside a live training environment. We installed the new steel structure, which was then painted with intumescent paint (which provides protection from fire) ready for the new flooring to follow on.

Once the flooring was completed, we installed scaffolding around the outside of the steelwork which allowed us to get up on deck to then begin installing timber walling. Currently we’re on with plaster boarding the timber walls, installing M&E first fix and timber joisting.

What's coming up next?

What’s next for Corridor A?

In the coming weeks, we’ll look to have plastered walls, timber lids completed and first floors formed ready for training bays to be built on top. M&E first fix works will be completed ready for second fix to commence in the new year.

New windows will be installed prior to the Christmas break to improve site security during our shutdown.

What’s next for the CITB Workshop?

Timber walls and joisting will be complete before the Christmas break, allowing us to complete boarding ready for plastering in the new year. First fix M&E will be complete before the Christmas shutdown.

External boarding will be completed, allowing us to remove scaffolding and enabling walling works on the ground floor to commence.
