About the project

This project comprises construction of a new-build extension, which will significantly increase the school’s overall performance and address ongoing space shortages. Currently, due to high pupil numbers and a lack of adequate classroom provision, the school is being forced to repurpose specialist areas such as creative arts and design rooms as standard teaching spaces. This not only limits the curriculum offering but also impacts the learning experience for students across various year groups.

The new extension will provide purpose-built classrooms and learning environments that better support the school’s academic needs and long-term growth. Internally, the project also involves remodelling of existing areas within the school to improve efficiency, modernise facilities, and better align the layout with the current and future needs of staff and students.

Externally, the scheme includes the creation of a new track area to increase recreational space, as well as upgraded pedestrian pathways for improved circulation around the site. Additionally, new gated and fenced access points will be installed to enhance safeguarding measures to the pre-school area.

A key consideration throughout the project is that the school will remain live and fully operational while the works are carried out. This presents both logistical and safety challenges, requiring close coordination with the school leadership team and a carefully phased programme of works.

Progress so far

Works are progressing well on the new extension at St Oswald’s Primary School, with key early-stage milestones already completed. The site has been fully established, with all necessary welfare facilities, fencing, and access controls in place to ensure a safe and efficient working environment as we move into the main construction phase.

Following the setup, we’ve laid a concrete base and installed a new equipment store for the school to use. Moving forward with the project our groundworks team have carrying out the reduced level dig to prepare the footprint of the new building. Once completed, we will install a sub-base to bring the area up to formation level, ensuring a stable base for the foundation works to follow.

Looking ahead to the summer works, we will be carrying out internal refurbishments in certain areas, installing a walking track on the main field, and creating a new rear entrance for pedestrian access. This will help reduce foot traffic through the main areas when the children return after the holidays.

The team is maintaining excellent momentum on site. We’ll continue to work closely with the school to minimise disruption and maintain a safe, secure environment while the school remains open.

As part of our ongoing commitment to community engagement and inspiring the next generation, we recently welcomed a group of pupils from St Oswald’s School onto the site of their new school extension project. Throughout the visit, we aimed to give the children a genuine insight into the world of construction, showing them the teamwork and planning involved in bringing a project like their new school extension to life. The pupils were engaged and asked plenty of thoughtful questions, making it a thoroughly rewarding experience for everyone involved.

We recently invited local children to take part in a drawing competition, creating posters themed around construction and site safety. The young artists showcased their creativity, producing fantastic posters that will be displayed on-site to promote safety and brighten up our working environment. To celebrate their efforts, each participant was rewarded with a Sewell goodie bag, bringing big smiles all around.
