About the project

The works comprises the second phase at York St John University, providing modern medical teaching areas for its health students.

The students will be gaining:

  • MRI Suite
  • X-Ray services
  • Computer suite
  • Reception & waiting area
  • Five-bed ward

On the first floor, there is even an Operating theatre!

Modifications to the existing ground floor gym area was necessary in order to construct a first floor over the previous gym. This means the sports hall has now been divided into two separate floors, with the first floor providing a mock operating theatre with canopy/pendants and a birthing suite.

Progress so far

The project commenced in June with an early works enabling contract, stripping out the proposed area for the new facilities.

This was done in preparation for the contracted works to start. In August, we started the contracted ground stabilisation works, followed by the erection of the structural steel frame and now the construction of the Metsec flooring has commenced.

We are currently entering week eleven of a twenty-eight week programme.

Fun Facts

  • The collective length of the ground stabilisation holes drilled is equivalent to three times the height of York Minster!
  • If we lined up the full steel framing system installation end-to-end, it would be the same length as 200 Olympic size swimming pools!
